San Severo (wine)

The name San Severo DOC stands for red , rosé and white wines from the municipality of San Severo in the southern Italian province of Foggia in the Apulia region . Sometimes they are also developed as young wine ( Novello ), sparkling wine ( Frizzante ) and sparkling wine ( Spumante ). Some of the red wines are allowed to carry the title “Riserva”. The wines have had a protected designation of origin ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1968 , the last update of which was published on March 7, 2014.

Growing area

Cultivation is permitted within the province of Foggia in the municipalities of San Severo and Torremaggiore and in parts of the municipalities of Castelnuovo della Daunia , Masseria Monachelle , San Paolo di Civitate , Apricena , Lucera , Poggio Imperiale and Lesina .

In 2016, 19,650 hectoliters of DOC wine were produced from 196 hectares of vineyards. This was the third highest production volume in Puglia after Primitivo di Manduria and Castel del Monte.

The San Severo DOC appellation includes the following types of wine and their grape varieties:

  • San Severo Bianco: must consist of at least 40–60% of the grape variety Bombino bianco and 40–60% of Trebbiano bianco . A maximum of 15% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the province of Foggia may be added. Is also developed as a frizzante and sparkling wine.
  • San Severo Rosso and San Severo Rosato: must consist of at least 70% Montepulciano grapes and a maximum of 30% Sangiovese . A maximum of 15% Uva di Troia , Merlot e Malvasia Nera and other red grape varieties approved for cultivation in the province of Foggia may be added; Rosso is also developed as Novello and "Riserva", Rosato can also be offered as a Frizzante.
  • Wines are produced under the name "San Severo ...", followed by the respective grape variety , which must consist of at least 85% of the respective grape variety. A maximum of 15% other analogue grape varieties authorized in the province of Foggia may be added:
