Leverano (wine)

The name Leverano stands for red , rosé and white wines from the southern Italian province of Lecce in the Apulia region . Sometimes they are also developed as Passito ( dessert wine ), young wine ( Novello ), "Riserva" or "Superiore". The wines have had a protected designation of origin ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1979 , the last update of which was published on March 7, 2014.

Growing area

Cultivation is permitted within the province of Lecce in the municipalities of Leverano and parts of the municipalities of Arnesano and Copertino .

The appellation "Leverano DOC" provides for the following types of wine and their grape varieties:

  • Leverano Bianco , Leverano Bianco Passito and Leverano Dolce Naturale: must be made from at least 50% of the Malvasia bianca grape variety . A maximum of 40% Vermentino fino may be added.
  • Leverano Rosato , Leverano Rosso and Leverano Novello: must be made from at least 50% of the Negroamaro grape variety . A maximum of 40% Malvasia nera di Lecce , Montepulciano and Sangiovese may be added. The remaining 10% may be red grape varieties (individually or together) that are approved for cultivation in the “Salento-Arco Ionico” production zone.
  • Leverano Negroamaro and Leverano Negroamaro Rosato: must be made from at least 85% Negroamaro grapes . A maximum of 15% other red grape varieties (individually or together) that are permitted for cultivation in the “Salento – Arco Ionico” production zone may be added.
  • Leverano Negroamaro with the addition "Superiore": must be made from at least 90% of the Negroamaro grape variety . A maximum of 10% other red grape varieties (individually or together) that are permitted for cultivation in the “Salento-Arco Ionico” production zone may be added.
  • Wines are produced under the name " Leverano ... ", followed by the respective grape variety , which must consist of at least 85% of the respective grape variety. A maximum of 15% other white grape varieties that are permitted in the "Salento-Arco Ionico" production zone may be added:
