Primitivo di Manduria

The Primitivo di Manduria is a red wine from the southern Italian region of Apulia . Its cultivation area includes parts of the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi on the south coast of the Salento peninsula , the "heel of the Italian boot". The name of the denomination is derived from the city of Manduria . Most of the wines are made from the Primitivo grape variety (also called Zinfandel , Tribidrag or Crljenak Kaštelanski). The Primitivo di Manduria received DOC status in 1974 . Developed as a sweet wine, it bears the name Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale and on February 23, 2011, it was classified as the first wine from Apulia DOCG .

Growing area

The cultivation of the grapes for the Primitivo di Manduria is authorized (in whole or in part) by the following municipalities: Manduria , Carosino , Monteparano , Leporano , Pulsano , Faggiano , Roccaforzata , San Giorgio Jonico , San Marzano di San Giuseppe , Fragagnano , Lizzano , Sava , Torricella , Maruggio , Avetrana and Taranto .

In 2017, 238,161 hectoliters of DOC wine were produced from 2722 hectares of vineyards. The Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale produced 1,111 hectoliters of dessert wine from 43 hectares.

Production regulations

Primitivo di Manduria DOC

  • Grape varieties : Primitivo at least 85%, up to 15% other non-aromatic red grape varieties approved in the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi.
  • Maximum yield per hectare: 9 tons of grapes / hectare, 63 hectoliters of wine / hectare.
  • Ripening time: The Primitivo di Manduria can be marketed from March 31st of the year following the harvest. With the name Riserva , it must mature for at least two years, of which at least 9 months in wooden barrels.

Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG

  • Grape varieties : 100% Primitivo .
  • The wine is made from grapes that are first dried before they are vinified. This partial rosinization takes place either on special drying devices (see straw wine ) or directly on the vine. This process is called Appassimento in Italian wines (see Passito ).
  • Maximum yield per hectare: 7 tons of grapes / hectare, 42 hectoliters of wine / hectare.
  • Ripening time: Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale can be marketed from June 1st of the year following the harvest.

  • Dry extract : at least 26.0 g / l
  • Residual sugar : maximum 18.0 g / l

Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG

  • Color : intense red with garnet reflections
  • Smell : rich, complex, with hints of plum
  • Taste : sweet, full-bodied, velvety
  • Alcohol content : at least 16% vol.
  • Acidity : at least 5.0 g / l
  • Dry extract : at least 30.0 g / l
  • Residual sugar : at least 50.0 g / l
