Squinzano (wine)

The name Squinzano DOC stands for red , rosé and white wines from the municipality of Squinzano in the southern Italian province of Lecce in the Apulia region . Sometimes they are also developed as young wine ( Novello ), sparkling wine ( Frizzante ) and sparkling wine ( Spumante ). Some of the red wines are allowed to carry the title “Riserva”. The wines have had a protected designation of origin ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1976 , the last update of which was published on March 7, 2014.

Growing area

Cultivation is permitted within the province of Lecce in the municipalities of Squinzano , San Pietro Vernotico , Torchiarolo and Novoli and in parts of the municipalities of Campi Salentina , Cellino San Marco , Trepuzzi , Surbo and Lecce .

The Squinzano DOC appellation provides for the following types of wine and their grape varieties:

  • Squinzano Bianco: must consist of at least 80% of the grape varieties Chardonnay and Malvasia Bianca (individually or together). A maximum of 20% other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the “Salento-Arco Ionico” production zone may be added. Is also developed as a sparkling wine.
  • Squinzano Rosso and Squinzano Rosato: must consist of at least 70% Negroamaro grapes . A maximum of 30% Malvasia Nera di Brindisi , Malvasia nera di Lecce and Sangiovese as well as other red grape varieties that are permitted for cultivation in the “Salento-Arco Ionico” production zone may be added; Rosso is also developed as Novello and "Riserva", Rosato can also be offered as a sparkling wine.
  • Wines are produced under the name " Squinzano ... ", followed by the respective grape variety , which must consist of at least 85% of the respective grape variety. A maximum of 15% other analogue grape varieties that are permitted in the "Salento-Arco Ionico" production zone may be added:
