List of grape varieties

Susumaniello or Somarello Nero is a red wine variety that is widespread in the Italian region of Apulia , which probably originally comes from Dalmatia and produces brightly colored , acidic red wines . It is mainly grown in the province of Brindisi , where it is mainly used as a blend component in the Negroamaro -based Brindisi Rosato and Brindisi Rosso as well as the Ottavianello -based Ostuni Ottavianello . Within this province, it occupies about five percent of the vineyard area, which equates to a planted area of about 72 hectares (as of 1999). Since September 6, 2003, their cultivation has been officially recommended in Apulia.

In a study published in 2008, Susumaniello was found to be related to the Sangiovese grape variety . Because the parents of the Sangiovese variety have not yet been determined beyond doubt, the exact relationship cannot yet be specified.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is slightly hairy (the hair is hardly visible, however), greenish with a slightly bronze tinge. The light green young leaves are slightly hairy and slightly velvety.
  • The medium-sized, almost pentagonal leaves are five-lobed and clearly indented. The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The conical grape is shouldered, medium-sized and has dense berries. The round berries are medium in size and plum blue in color. The aroma of the berry is quite neutral.

The grape variety ripens about 25 days after the Gutedel and is therefore early ripening by southern Italian standards.
