Castelnuovo della Daunia (until 1863 just called Castelnuovo ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 1359 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia in Apulia . The municipality is located about 38 kilometers west-northwest of Foggia and borders directly on the province of Campobasso ( Molise ).

The thermal resort is known for its good air quality and the mineral water from the La Cavallina spring . This water used to be bottled and sold all over Italy.

The municipal area consists of three "islands" with different areas, which are surrounded by other municipalities and in the south of which the main town is located. The north is bounded by the Fortore River .

history

As Castrum Sclavorum or Castelluccio de 'Sclavis , the place was founded by the Schiavoni and was settled by Slavs .

The palazzo baronale , today's seat of the town hall , was built in the 11th century.

The name Castelnuovo was given to the place during the 15th century.

Between 1468 and 1476, numerous Albanians who had fled the Turkish massacres in their home area moved in. In Castelnuovo, too, the refugees initially encountered intolerance, which made coexistence difficult.

On April 18, 1863, the local council decided to give the place an epithet to distinguish it from the numerous communities of the same name. The new name Castelnuovo della Daunia emphasizes the affiliation to the Monti Dauni mountain range .

Problems

Emigration

Like many other smaller municipalities in Italy, Castelnuovo della Daunia has to contend with the consequences of the population emigrating from the village. In 1951 the town still had a population of over 3,600, in 2016 it was only slightly more than 1,400. Reasons for emigration include a. lack of future prospects, especially for young people.

Building ruins

In the past few years, the place received frequent media presence when various grievances were uncovered. The Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano reported on September 28, 2015 that Castelnuovo della Daunia was setting the record for building ruins and wasting public money. Around ten million euros are said to have been spent on building structures that were never put into operation. These include u. a. a prison, an amphitheater and an entire holiday complex with several holiday homes that fell victim to vandalism .

The Italian satirical program Striscia la NOTEia also targeted the community several times.

The mayor Guerino De Luca regretted this reporting in an interview and denied that Castelnuovo was a "village of waste". He stated that the construction of the prison was commissioned by the Italian Ministry of Justice and that it was a failed plan in which local politics was not involved. He also referred to public investments that have been working well for years, such as the local thermal system.
