Celenza Valfortore is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 1485 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia in Apulia . The municipality is located about 48 kilometers west-northwest of Foggia , belongs to the Comunità Montana dei Monti Dauni Settentrionali and borders directly on the province of Campobasso ( Molise ). In the west of the municipality is the Lago di Occhito .

history

The ancient city of Celenna , which according to legend is said to have been founded by Diomedes, was founded in 275 BC. Destroyed by the Romans. In the Byzantine era the name of the village changed from Celentia to Capitinata .

On the southern edge of the municipality, the Strada Statale 17 dell'Appennino Abruzzese e Appulo Sannitica runs from Antrodoco to Foggia.
