Celle di San Vito (French-Provencal Cèles de Sant Vuite , [ ˈsɛləs də ˈsɑ̃t ˈvɥit ]) is an Italian municipality with 164 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia in Apulia . Together with Faeto , Celle di San Vito forms a Franco-Provencal language island in Puglia.
history
Celle di San Vito was probably founded like Faeto in the 13th century, when Charles of Anjou sent French soldiers to Apulia to suppress revolts in the region around Foggia (1267, 1268), especially the Saracens , in Lucera . In 1269, after a seven-month siege, Lucera was taken by French troops. As a counterbalance to the remaining Saracens - a large part was resettled and distributed throughout the Kingdom of Naples - French families were settled in the region by Charles. The thesis, according to which Waldensian refugees should have founded the villages of Celle di San Vito and Faeto towards the end of the 12th century, is now considered uncertain and cannot be substantiated by documents. In contrast, a few documents from the 13th century prove that the founding fathers of the two (and other) villages in northern Apulia were French soldiers and their families.
Toponomy
The name Celle di San Vito goes back to a monastery (= Celle, dt. "Cells (of a monastery)"), which was used in the 13th century by Benedictine monks from the convent of San Nicola as a summer residence. The second part of the place name (San Vito) refers to a small pilgrimage site, the name of which is derived from the mountain of the same name that towers above the place.
geography
Celle di San Vito is located in the province of Foggia in the north of Apulia, 726 meters above sea level. d. M. and on the border with Campania ( Province of Benevento and Province of Avellino ).
Population development
Like many other small municipalities in Italy, Celle di San Vito is struggling with high levels of emigration. In 1900 the place still had a good 1000 inhabitants, today there are fewer than 200.
