The Grade Dreidecker was a single-engine aircraft designed by the German engineer and entrepreneur Hans Grade (1879-1946).

history

Hans Grade built the flying machine in a shed during his military service with the Magdeburg pioneers. At the end of September 1908, the first attempts at taxiing began on Cracauer Anger . About a month later, on November 2nd, 1908, he made the first German powered flight on the Kleiner Cracauer Anger. By the end of the year he had reached flights at a height of 1.5 meters over 100 to 400 meters in 30 to 40 seconds. At about 30 km / h it was essentially straight. Crash landings were part of everyday life when learning to fly. In 1909 Hans Grade decided to break off the tests and, based on the experience he had gained, to build a new aircraft. Grade won the Lanz-Preis der Lüfte on October 30, 1909 with this new airplane, the monoplane .

The original machine no longer exists. A replica is in the Magdeburg Technology Museum .

construction

The wings were canvas-covered on one side and completely flat bamboo constructions. Steel tubes were used for the engine suspension on the central wing and the landing gear. The air-cooled six-cylinder engine with 36 hp weighed 54 kg and was a do-it-yourself construction. Comparable automobile engines between 30 and 50 hp weighed between 70 and 170 kg at that time. Only the light construction in connection with the quite powerful engine may explain the successful flight.
