life and career

Josef Umbach, who had already played in the first team of FC Munich-Gladbach as a youth, made it to the final of the West German championship for the first time with his team in 1908. On April 12, 1908, Munich-Gladbach lost in Kleve with 0: 5 goals against Duisburg SpV . In the 1908/09 season, however, FC won the final with 3-2 goals after extra time against Prussia Duisburg and was therefore allowed to take part in the final round of the 1909 German soccer championship. On May 2, 1909, the southern German representative Phoenix Karlsruhe was the enemy in Duisburg . The men around Karl Wegele , Otto Reiser and Emil Oberle won the game 5-0 against Josef Umbach's team, who could not do anything against the Karlsruhe defensive on half-left. Phoenix won the German championship in 1909. From the round 1909/10, FC Munich-Gladbach took part in the games of the West Ten League and came second behind the champions Duisburger SV. In the 1911/12 round, the FC were again in the West German final, but lost 2: 4 goals against the Cölner BC 01.

The striker of FC München-Gladbach was for the international match on 16 October 1910 against the Netherlands in the national team appointed. The game in Kleve was just lost 1: 2. Umbach himself could not distinguish himself as a goalscorer. Together with left winger Richard Queck, he formed the left wing. The game took place without players from southern Germany, with the players from the two Karlsruhe clubs KFV ( Max Breunig , Fritz Förderer , Gottfried Fuchs , Julius Hirsch , Ernst Hollstein ) and Phönix (Oberle, Reiser, Wegele) being seen as reinforcements for the DFB team would have been. He did not play any other international matches.

He was a businessman by profession.
