The Naples – Salerno railway connects the metropolises of Naples ( Italian: Napoli ) on the Gulf of Naples and Salerno on the Gulf of Salerno .

State of development

The railway line is completely two- track and electrified . It is 54 kilometers long. The starting point in Naples is the Napoli Centrale train station . As part of the construction of high-speed lines in Italy , the southern part of the line between Nocera Inferiore and Salerno was largely completely redrawn in a tunnel. The old route is used by trains of the Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Napoli .

history

The first section of the line was opened on October 3, 1839, the Naples – Portici railway by King Ferdinand II . It was the very first railway in Italy . The line was only completed 27 years after this partial opening on May 20, 1866 with the release of the last section from Vietri Sul Mare to Salerno.
