Tommaso Conca
Tommaso Conca , also Tommaso Maria Conca, (* December 22, 1734 in Gaeta ; † December 13, 1822 in Rome ) was an Italian painter on the threshold from the late Baroque to Roman classicism .
Life
He received his education from his uncle Sebastiano Conca , who, like himself, came from Gaeta. At first Tommaso emulated his uncle, but then dealt with the art of the Carracci.
Probably already in the “Academia del Nudo” of his uncle he met Anton Raphael Mengs , the important innovator of art and classicist painter, who had settled permanently in Rome from 1748 and through his friendship with the archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann with his antiquity reception new conception of art came. Tommaso Conca essentially followed this stylistic path and created a series of frescoes and panel paintings that reveal the classicist influence, especially towards the end of the 18th century.
From 1780 to 1786 he was mainly occupied with the painting of the casino in the Villa Borghese (Rome) . In 1786 he painted the ceiling of the Musesaal in the Museo Pio-Clementino . In 1789 this was followed by an order to fresco the dome and the side vaults of the cathedral of Città di Castello . In 1811 he was involved in the decoration of the Quirinal palace for Napoleon participated.
