Thumeritz marble
The Thumeritzer marble is in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria occurring and south of Unterthumeritz mined marble , geologically with the Wachau marble is comparable.
use
This marble was ground and polished as a tombstone, plinth and wall cladding, portal and staircase and delivered to large parts of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . Thumeritz marble can therefore be found in many Viennese cemeteries as well as in Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. The important Austrian stonemason company Sommer & Less based in Vienna had a quarry in Thumeritz during the monarchy. This marble was sometimes also used as a brick or as a work stone .
Lime kiln
The marble was partly burned to lump lime. The first written mention of a lime kiln comes from the year 1839/40. Up to the beginning of the 20th century, there were probably around 50 rural and stately lime kilns in operation. In Unterthumeritz an 18 meter high lime kiln was built in 1904, which was restored in 2002/2003 and can now be visited.
