Hermann-Josef Weidinger OPraem (* as Heinrich Anton Weidinger January 16, 1918 in Riegersburg ; † March 21, 2004 in Waidhofen an der Thaya ) was a canon from the order of the Premonstratensians , a missionary and known in Austria as the “herb pastor Weidinger”.

Life

Weidinger, the son of a farmer from the Austrian Waldviertel , attended the community school across the border in Frain (Vranov) on the Thaya in the then German-speaking part of South Moravia . At the age of 18, Weidinger, who had enjoyed spending time in his uncle's herb garden as a boy , made the decision to become a missionary . After graduating from the advanced school in Horn, he decided to serve in the mission and entered the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco . After brief preparation and language training in Unterwaltersdorf and Italy, he came to the Republic of China in 1938 , where he studied philosophy and theology and learned the printing trade. He founded a publishing house in Macau , which was then still in Portugal . He made a name for himself as a translator of well-known works into Chinese . According to medical courses learned Weidinger assistant to a military doctor , the Chinese natural medicine know.

After completing his studies in philosophy and theology, Weidinger was ordained a priest in 1949 . On behalf of the Vatican , he was used to look after Chinese academics living abroad. When a malaria illness made it impossible for him to return to China while on vacation in 1953 , he transferred to the Premonstratensian Monastery of Geras , chose the religious name Hermann-Josef and became a pastor in Harth , a parish incorporated into the monastery . There he set up a collie breed.

After the death of Pastor Karl Rauscher in 1979, Weidinger took over the management of the Friends of Medicinal Herbs Association based in Karlstein an der Thaya , which has more than 20,000 members. In 1983 local farmers followed him in response to lively inquiries from doctors and pharmacists and set up an area for growing herbs of 7 hectares. Spice cultivation was added later, for example the Waldviertel caraway .

“Herbal Pastor” Weidinger reached an audience of millions with his comments and advice in print media, radio broadcasts and TV reports. Weidinger also wrote 40 books. His work is continued by his successor Benedikt Felsinger .
