BW

Amaliendorf-Aalfang is a market town with 1108 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria .

geography

Amaliendorf-Aalfang is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of the market town covers 8.04 km², 41.38% of the area is forested.

Amaliendorf-Aalfang is a scattered settlement with an extensive network of trails. The settlement is located in the middle of large forests in the northwestern Waldviertel. The embedding in the granite zone of the “Bohemian mass” is decisive for the living space. It is a former mountain range that arose during the Variski mountain formation around 350 million years ago and was later removed to form a hull landscape.

Granite shapes the natural and cultural landscape of Amaliendorf-Aalfang in many ways. Aalfanger granite is economically mined in two quarries. Due to the weathering of wool sacks , huge granite blocks come to light in many places and form bizarre rock shapes, such as the famous Wackelstein von Amaliendorf or the so-called Bichl, d. H. Rocky mounds that appear in small areas in the middle of the field and mostly form dry edaphic locations with birch and pine trees . Granite disintegrates in a creepy manner and tends to form acidic brown earths up to agriculturally unusable podsol soils when there is high precipitation . The late settlement of this area is crucially related to this.

history

The community consists of three districts of different ages:

  • the eel catching in the valley of the Braunau and the Romaubach , which according to the sources was founded around 1600 at the latest
  • the district of Falkendorf on the slope of the Machoberges, which was created around 1730 by the Falkenhayn lordship in Schrems and
  • the Amaliendorf founded in 1799 by Count Strassoldo , the owner of the Schwarzenau lordship.

In 1627 the "Weirs of Alennfang" were first mentioned. They were built after the confluence of the Braunau and Romau rivers and were used to catch the eels that came up the Elbe to this point. Until the 19th century, the spellings Eilfang and Ailfang were also common for eel fishing .

Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria was the namesake of the village of Amaliendorf, founded in 1799 by Count Vinzenz von Strassoldo , her Colonel-Hofmeister.

On September 6, 1967, the decision was made to merge the municipalities between Amaliendorf and Aalfang. On January 28, 1999 the community was raised to a market community.
