The rocking stone in the Schrems forest

The Wackelstein in the Schremser Wald is located in the municipality of Schrems , 650 m southwest of Amaliendorf-Aalfang in Lower Austria . The stone on the "Frühappel" hill is surrounded by a possibly natural stone circle made of granite stones and shows a bulge on the surface. It is about 3.5 m high, 5.0 m long and weighs 105 t. The stone, declared a natural monument in 1927 , shows traces of preparation for blasting.

Legend and tradition

Base stone and rocking stone are said to have been next to each other. One day the devil came along, stumbled and struck one stone on the other with his toe. Since then, it wobbles. The devil is that the stone only wobbles when you press on a very specific point on the left edge.

Until the 20th century, the custom of crawling through the place where the stone and the rocking block form a narrow angle when the moon is waning was preserved. One should get rid of the " lumbago " from this.
