description

Appearance and leaf

Eriobotrya deflexa grows as a small, evergreen tree with a height of 5 to 12 meters. The bark of young twigs is covered with dense brown hairs, and the hairs lose their hair over time. The alternate leaves are crowded at the end of the branches and have a 2 to 40 centimeter long, bare petiole. The leathery, simple leaf blade is oblong to lanceolate with a width of 3 to 7 centimeters and a length of 10 to 19 centimeters, above the middle it is widest. The leaf base tapers into a wedge shape, the leaf tip is drawn out briefly, the leaf edge is irregularly notched. The upper side of the leaf is shiny, both sides are hairy at first, but then soon bare. The middle nerve is raised on both sides of the leaf and there are ten to twelve pairs of lateral nerves. The stipules fall off early.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends from May to June. The 6 to 12 millimeter long inflorescence stem is covered with dense woolly brown hair. The paniculate inflorescence has a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters and contains many flowers. The unterseits woolly hairy bracts are lanceolate at a length of 4 to 6 mm. The 6 to 12 millimeter long peduncle is densely hairy woolly brown.

The hermaphroditic flowers have a diameter of 1.5 to 1.8 centimeters and are radially symmetrical and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The cup-shaped flower cup (hypanthium) has woolly brown hair on the outside. The five sepals with woolly brown hair on the outside and bald on the inside are about 1.2 cm long and slightly shorter than the flower cup and triangular-egg-shaped with a blunt or pointed upper end. The five free, white petals are circular or obovate with a length of about 8 millimeters and a width of about 7 millimeters. There are twenty stamens . The three to five-chamber ovary is bare. Each ovary chamber contains two ovules . The three to five styles are fused and hairy at their base.

Fruit and seeds

The 7 to 12 millimeter long fruit stalk is hairy downy brown. With a diameter of 1.2 to 2 centimeters, the almost spherical apple fruits turn yellowish red when ripe from June to August. The sepals are curved back on the fruit. The seeds are big.

Occurrence

Eriobotrya deflexa occurs in the Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Hainan , Taiwan , and Vietnam . It inhabits altitudes between 1000 and 2100 meters. It thrives on slopes in evergreen deciduous forests of the valleys.

use

Eriobotrya deflexa can be grown as an ornamental wood in subtropical regions. It is suitable as a street tree or as a small house tree and can be planted in sunny to partially shaded situations. It is quite short-lived with a lifespan of 20 to 30 years. Eriobotrya deflexa can be attacked by fire blight.
