history
Eisgarn is a typical clearing name and is derived from the Old Slavic izgorje , which means something like burned-out area . The village was first mentioned in a document in 1294. Johann von Klingenberg, who received the county of Litschau as pledge for the financial support of the Habsburg Albrecht II , founded a secular canon monastery here in 1330 . The foundation was confirmed by the duke in 1344. The school in the monastery building, already mentioned in a document in 1393, still exists today and is one of the oldest elementary schools in Lower Austria.
In 1680 there was an expansion of the settlement through the establishment of the anterior village by Provost Ezechiel Ludwig. Ice yarn was raised to the market in 1930.

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were only 694 inhabitants, in 2011 only 668. The decline is due to both a negative balance of migration and a negative birth balance . In the last few years Eisgarn was able to slightly increase the number of inhabitants again.
