Marko Elsner (born April 11, 1960 in Maribor ; † May 18, 2020 in Ljubljana ) was a Yugoslav - Slovenian football player .

Career

Elsner began his career in 1977 at NK Olimpija Ljubljana . In 1983 he moved to FK Red Star Belgrade in what was then the capital of Yugoslavia. With Red Star he won the Yugoslav championship once and the Yugoslav cup once. During his time in Belgrade , he was also appointed to the squad of the Yugoslav team for the 1984 European Football Championship in France . Elsner could not book any use and Yugoslavia was eliminated in the group stage. In that year he was able to win the bronze medal with the selection of Yugoslavia at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In 1987 the Slovenian moved to France to the OGC Nice , where he stayed for three years. After his father, Branko Elsner , the former Austrian team boss , had good contacts in Austria , the young Elsner switched to Admira Wacker in the Austrian Bundesliga. After only one year in the Alps , he went back to OGC Nice and let his career end there until 1993.

Elsner played for two national teams. He was appointed 14 times for the Yugoslav national soccer team and twice for the Slovenian national soccer team. The defender made his debut for his new home country Slovenia on November 18, 1992 against Cyprus .

His father Branko Elsner was a long-time soccer coach, his sons Luka and Rok also became soccer professionals.
