Ivan Kristo (born February 4, 1980 in Lustenau ) is a former Austrian soccer player and current soccer coach .

Club career

Kristo began his career in the youth of FC Dornbirn before he was accepted into what was then BNZ Vorarlberg in 1993 . For the 1997/98 season he was signed together with Matthias Keck from SC Austria Lustenau , where both players were initially used in the club's youth. In the second half of the season he made his Bundesliga debut at 0-0, in the game against SV Ried , when he came on for Erik Regtop in minute 89 . In the first half of the 1998/99 season another short stint against FC Tirol Innsbruck followed , before he was able to achieve the important equalizer in December 1998 against direct relegation competitor SK Vorwärts Steyr to make it 1-1. In the second half of the season he received more and more game shares from coach Edmund Stöhr and became a kind of “shooting star” of the team. After two goals in two consecutive league games against the reigning champions SK Sturm Graz , where he defeated the then Sturm goalkeeper Kazimierz Sidorczuk with a long-range shot from almost sixty meters on the first goal , (note: goal of the year 1999) he was one of the most sought-after Austrian talents. In addition to Austria Wien and the Grazer AK , Sturm Graz in particular tried to sign the talent as a league croesus and offered a rumored transfer fee of one million schillings. The transfer, which was already considered safe in the media, subsequently failed due to the veto of Lustenau President Hubert Nagel , who did not think the amount offered was enough. In addition, he was one of three nominees in the official election for “Newcomer of the Year” at the end of the season, but drew the shorter one than the then LASK Linz player Jürgen Pichorner .

After an injury at the beginning of the season of the following season , he lost his regular place under the new Lustenau coach Klaus Scheer and stagnated in his development as a result. Over the entire season he was in the starting line-up seven times and only played five games over the full length of the game. Due to the rapid development of Kristo in the preseason, the club only strengthened itself with Markus Schneidhofer , as another talent in the forward position, which now took revenge. With only 22 goals scored and a negative goal difference of 52, they were relegated to second class after three years as the knocked-down bottom of the table. After relegation there was a total upheaval in the team due to the foreigners regulation in the first division , which had to give up every experienced legionnaire with Thomas Ritter , Roger Prinzen , Harald Katemann , Tamás Tiefenbach , Erik Regtop and the Brazilian Pavão and thus the basic structure the team lost. Kristo was held and was considered a beacon of hope for the reconstruction. However, the season was again disappointing for players and club. Despite the innumerable departures, he could not establish himself as a regular player and did not get beyond the status of the joker over the entire season. He only got two goals. As a relegated club, the club never had anything to do with being promoted again and found itself in fifth place in the league's no man's land. With the return of Tiefenbach and Samuel Koejoe for the 2001/02 season, his game shares decreased again significantly. Although he made eight short appearances in the second half of the season without scoring, he slipped from hopeful to striker number five in the team hierarchy. During the winter break, he was then given clearance for a transfer.

As a result, a move to Belgium to the former European Cup finalist Royal Antwerp failed after weeks of negotiations shortly before the end of the transfer transition period. Kristo then returned to Lustenau without any preparation, but was no longer used in the second half of the season. At the end of the season he left the club for good and moved in August 2002, together with Gerhard Fellner , to the Scottish second division club FC St. Mirren . After only one use in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Challenge Cup at 3-5 against Queen of the South , his "trial contract" was not extended. Until the spring of 2003 he did not find a club before he moved to the Regionalliga West for FC Hard . In the previous year's champions, who had only not been promoted due to the lost relegation against Kapfenberger SV , he should now complete the club's already strong offensive. The team also played a strong second half, but missed the promotion due to the overpowering opponents such as SCR Altach and SPG WSG Wattens / FC Wacker Tirol .

For the following season he then moved to the newly founded club BSV Juniors Villach . At the successor club of BSV Bad Bleiberg , which acted as a satellite club of FC Carinthia , he then tried another attempt in professional football, which he failed again. In total, he was only in the starting line-up eleven times and only scored one goal of the season. Despite a squad composed of well-known players such as Thomas Ambrosius , Heimo Vorderegger , Klaus Rohseano or Gerhard Breitenberger , the team disappointed over the entire season and was relegated from bottom of the table to the third division. After that, FC Kärnten ended their cooperation and the club had to disband after only one year of existence.

Without a club, Kristo moved back to Vorarlberg to the regional league club VfB Hohenems . After a year in the lower third of the table, he dared to step abroad again and switched to the Croatian second division club NK Novalja , with whom he immediately relegated. In the spring of 2007 he switched to FC Rot-Weiß Rankweil , who was looked after by his ex-Lustenau teammate Armand Benneker , where he was allowed to celebrate twice as a regular player in the Regionalliga West in the following one and a half seasons. In the summer of 2008, at the age of 28, he went to Vorarlberger-Unterhaus, where he played for VfB Bezau , TSV Altenstadt and FC Schlins in the following years and simultaneously advanced his coaching training.

National team

In 1997 he took part in the 1997 U-17 World Cup in Egypt with Austria under the then coach Paul Gludovatz . The team with players like Martin Stranzl and Paul Scharner was eliminated from the tournament with zero points as bottom of the table after the preliminary round.

In April 1999, at the age of 19, he was called up for the first time by the then coach Ernst Weber into the squad of the Austrian U-21 national team for the European Championship qualifier against the Netherlands , but remained without action. He made his debut in October 2009 against the Cypriot U-21 team when he came on for Michael Mehlem at the beginning of the second half . He was used in four games for the Austrian U-21s.

Coaching career

He gained his first coaching experience in 2011 as a youth coach at FC Schlins. In 2012 he moved to the youth department of FC Dornbirn before taking over the U-18 team of FC Koblach from 2014. In 2016 he trained his first men's team with SC Hatlerdorf for a few months. He has been looking after the U-18 team at SCR Altach since 2017 .
