Gordon Clayton (born November 3, 1936 in Wednesbury , † September 29, 1991 in Stretford ) was an English football goalkeeper . In his short professional career he was mostly only a substitute at Manchester United and only came to two league appearances there in the championship season 1956/57.
Athletic career
Clayton was already used as a young goalkeeper in English school and youth selections and at his home club Manchester United he was one of the youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1953 . In the further course of his career, however, he was denied the way to the Proifelf and instead shaped competitors like Reg Allen , Jack Crompton , Ray Wood and Harry Gregg in the 1950s the goalkeeping position at "United". He completed only two games in the 1956/57 championship season as a substitute for Wood on March 16, 1957 against Wolverhampton Wanderers (1: 1) and on April 29, 1957 against West Bromwich Albion (1: 1). A good two and a half years later, Clayton moved in November 1959 to the third division team Tranmere Rovers near Liverpool.
Even at his new club, Clayton was only a replacement behind the "long-running" George Payne and after his debut on January 30, 1960 in the scoring 4-5 against Reading FC , he came to three league appearances in the 1960/61 season, with the Relegation to the fourth division ended. He then left the club and was now at the amateur club Sankeys of Wellington between the posts.
Clayton died in late September 1991 at the age of 64.
