Arthur Reginald "Reg" Allen (born May 3, 1919 in Marylebone , London , † April 3, 1976 in Ealing , London) was an English football player on the position of goalkeeper .

career

Reg Allen began his football career with Corona FC , which played in the regional Hanwell and District League . On one of his missions, Allen was spotted by a Queens Park Rangers fan who recommended him to his favorite club. QPR invited Allen to a trial training session, where he soon did some assignments with the reserve team. In 1938 he received a professional contract and came for the first team on November 26, 1938 in an away game of the Football League Third Division South at AFC Newport County (0-2) for use.

After Allen had just completed three missions in the 1938/39 season, the Second World War broke out. In August 1941, Allen was taken prisoner of war, from which he was only released in May 1945. In the 1947/48 season he won the championship of the Football League Third Division South with QPR and rose with the team in the second-rate Football League Second Division . There the team first finished 13th, before landing in the following season 1949/50 in 20th place and thus only narrowly escaped relegation. The reason for the poor performance of the Rangers this season was the relatively harmless offensive, which scored the fewest hits in the league (only 40 goals in 42 games). Therefore, the relegation was primarily a merit of the defensive with only 57 goals conceded. On the defensive, Reg Allen stood out, who was one of the best goalkeepers of his time.

This was Matt Busby noticed that Allen in the summer of 1950 to Manchester United took. In the Red Devils , Allen was in the seasons 1950/51 and 1951/52 with 40 and 33 league appearances, respectively, goalkeeper of his club, with whom he was runner-up in the first year and then champion of the English league . In the following 1952/53 season he only played two games (his last for United on October 4, 1952 in the 2-6 debacle at Wolverhampton Wanderers ) because Jack, who was born in Manchester and has been under contract with United since 1945, was there Crompton had managed to regain his place between the posts. At the end of the same season United ended up in eighth place and Allen moved to FC Altrincham , in whose ranks he let his active career end.
