Geoffrey "Geoff" Bent (born September 27, 1932 in Salford , † February 6, 1958 in Munich ) was an English football player . He died in the British European Airways flight 609 crash in Munich, killing eight Manchester United players .

Life

Bent was born in Irlams o 'th' Height , near Salford, Lancashire in September 1932. He was the only child of miner Clifford Bent and his wife Clara.

He joined United in 1948. In 1951 he became a professional. His job as defense attorney was to keep Roger Byrne 's back clear. Byrne played on his left, Bill Foulkes on his right. In the 1954-55 season he had his first season as a regular. Bent married Marion Mallandaine in Bolton in 1953. In 1957 their daughter Karen was born.

Bent won the English championship with Manchester United in 1956 and 1957. He reached the semi-finals with his club in the second participation in the European Cup after a 3: 3 in the second leg at Red Star Belgrade . After the team had made a stopover in Munich to refuel during the return flight from Belgrade , the plane crashed while attempting to take off. Bent was one of the 23 fatalities of the total of 43 passengers.

He was survived by his parents, wife, and five-month-old daughter. His widow Marion contributed to the documentary Munich: End of a Dream .
