John "Jackie" Scott (born December 22, 1933 in Belfast , † June 1978 in Manchester ) was a Northern Irish football player . He was one of the "Busby Babes" of Manchester United in the first half of the 1950s , but was rarely used in the first team and eventually moved to Grimsby Town . There he was a regular player in the second and third division for seven years. In addition, he was part of the Northern Irish squad at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden .
Athletic career
Belfast born Scott played for Boyland Youth Club and Ormond Star in his youth . In 1950 he was discovered by talent scouts from Manchester United and after an initial engagement in the youth department of "United" he signed his first professional contract in October 1951. A year later he made his debut on October 4, 1952 against Wolverhampton Wanderers , where the reigning champions lost the game with a hefty 2: 6. In the next four years, Scott's further probation opportunities were rare. He could not prevail against the competition in his position of the winger for the most part and on the way to the championship again in 1956 , his contribution with only one league appearance against Preston North End (1: 3) was too small for an official medal. In the same year he left the club for Grimsby Town , which had just been promoted to the second division. Scott had only played three competitive games for Manchester United's first team and lost all of them.
Scott found his sporting luck in Grimsby and his consistent achievements there did not go unnoticed by those responsible for the Northern Irish national team . After being appointed to the B selection in 1957, he was also part of the A-team that left for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. There Scott played his two first and only internationals for Northern Ireland against the CSSR (2-1) and France (0-4). Scott spent seven years in Grimsby, scoring 54 goals in 250 competitive games and after relegating to third division in 1959, he returned to the second division three years later. In 1963 he moved to the fourth division York City . There and later at FC Margate in the Southern League , he let his active career end until 1966.
Scott died at the age of only 44 after an accident on a construction site.
