David George Ashworth (* 2. June 1868 in Poulton-le-Fylde , England ; † 23. March 1947 in Blackpool ) was an English football - referee and coach , who several years Oldham Athletic and Liverpool trained.

Career

Ashworth became Oldham Athletic's first coach in 1906. After eight successful years he moved to Stockport County , whose team he looked after during the First World War . In December 1919 Ashworth was appointed coach of Liverpool FC. Although the team initially won only two of eleven games, he still led the team to a respectable fourth place, eight points behind the Burnley champions. The following season Ashworth led Liverpool to their third league title. In his third season, the team was also on the championship course before Ashworth returned to his relegation-threatened club in the middle of the season to be closer to his family. However, he could not prevent relegation and Oldham was relegated bottom of the table. Liverpool were six points ahead of champions despite just one win in their last seven games. After relegation, Ashworth left Oldham for Manchester City . When the club found themselves a short time later on a relegation zone, Ashworth resigned from his post as coach.
