Andree Bernhardin von Oberburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andree Bernhardin - Freiherr von Oberburg on Khänitzhof and Rotelsegkh (* approx. 1626; † approx. 1673), kk colonel and commander of the fortress Otočac on the Croatian kk military border . He was the descendant of a noble family residing in the Duchy of Carniola since around 1350 , whose possessions were mainly located in Inner Carniola on the Poik .

coat of arms

In a shield divided by white and black diagonally to the left, two diagonally left bars in alternating colors, abbreviated towards the center ; on the shield a crowned spangenhelm with black and white helmet covers . Helmet gem : a closed flight, divided five times by white and black obliquely to the left .

The coat of arms is very similar to the coat of arms of the Oberburg family, which occurred in Switzerland (Bern, Oberburg) in the Middle Ages and whose image was passed down to us by Stettler .

Life

Adolescent years

Andree Bernhardin, like so many of his ancestors, chose a military career. Around 1645 he volunteered with three armored servants of his own in imperial military service, later he was a cornet , then commander of a cavalry company under the old Piccolo and Auersperg regiments . He does not seem to have been penniless, because in the baron diploma it is expressly mentioned that he is "in our service with the addition of his own fortune."

When Emperor Leopold I came to Ljubljana on September 7, 1660 to receive the hereditary homage from the estates there, the four equestrian companies of the countryside - around 800 mounted - marched past the emperor at around four in the afternoon . Andree Bernhardin was an ensign (cornet) in the first company ( squadron ).

In the years 1656 to 1658, already married at that time, the Carniolan decreed several times for a use in the area of the military border. During these years the family lived in Ljubljana , where he represented the African party as the knight Marlabusto on February 17, 1652 at a knight game and ring race .

family

Andree Bernhardin's wife, Katharina Sidonia, née von Isenhausen (certified Laibach January 2, 1691), came from an old Carniolan aristocratic family that had owned the indigenous family there since the end of the 14th century . The birth dates of the children indicate that the family first lived in Ljubljana, then in Fiume ( Rijeka ) and finally in Slavina in Innerkrain near the village of Illyrisch Feistritz ( Ilirska Bistrica in Slovenian ). The daughter Maria Sidonia was born on December 2, 1654 in Laibach. She married in Slavina in 1674, where her brother Wolf Wilhelm, whose life data is unknown, was the best man. The son Rinaldo was baptized on May 22, 1668 in Fiume, Johann Josef on December 12, 1670 again in Slavina (Schi. P. 280).

Colonel and captain of the Fortezza Ototschatz (Otočac)

On April 15, 1661 Andree Bernhardin was appointed captain of Otočac (now in Lika / Croatia ). The Fortezza Otočac, the seat of an independent main team with the associated fortresses Prozor (in Croatia), Drenov klanac , Sinaz , Jurjeve stene , Gola brda , Dolane , Godača and Morska gora as well as a large number of Wallachian villages were part of the sea border in the kk system Military border.

During this time he came into conflict with his superiors several times; In 1664 he received a fine for disobedience and in 1666 he was acquitted of the charge of conspiracy with the Turks.

On the other hand, he was recognized for his circumspection in handling the administrative tasks, his personal commitment and his bravery. This emerges from a corresponding letter of recommendation from the Vice-General to Karlsstadt ( Karlovac , Croatia), Count Petar Zrinyi , to the Viennese court. When Ali Bascha Tschengitsch, the Turkish Vice-Governor and brother of the Pasha of Bosnia , marched on Otočac with 9,000 men (according to Gauhe 8,000) in the autumn of 1664 , Andree Bernhardin was able to take over the count thanks to the efforts of scouts and his liaison officers beyond the military border Warn Zrinyi in good time of the approaching danger. Then on October 16, Zrinyi awaited the Turkish armed forces with 2000 horsemen and 300 dragoons in a forest near Jurjeve Stene. There there was a two-hour battle between the border guards of Zrinyi and the completely surprised horsemen of Chengich Pasha. The Turks were defeated: over 2,000 were killed, 370 (according to Gauhe 256) were taken prisoner, including Tschengitsch Pasha himself.

Andree Bernhardin was the first to strike with his team and, although wounded by two saber blows, he made a decisive contribution to Zriny’s victory through his personal example. As a thank you and in recognition of his loyal military service - especially on the sea border, he received the rank of colonel . He presumably held the command post in Otočac until his death; In any case, the position was reassigned on March 3, 1673.

Elevation to the baron class

In July 1669 Andree Bernhardin was allowed to go to Vienna to the court, probably in connection with the elevation to the baron class . The Freiherrenstandsdiplom issued on this occasion in Vienna on September 3, 1669 contains some dates and - which is particularly important from a genealogical point of view - several personal names and their family relationships. Andree Bernhardin's father, Lorenz von Oberburg, appears first, who was raised from knighthood with all of his children and grandchildren to the status of baron. They received the title "Barons on Khänitzhof and Rotelsegkh". Lorenz von Oberburg was then a captain in Austria ( Istria , presumably based in Mitterburg ), Kharst (Karst) and Plänicks (Alben, now Labin in Istria). The award document shows that the upper castle had belonged to the nobility and knighthood for almost six hundred years, i.e. since about 1050, and for about three hundred years, i.e. since 1350, to the nobility of Krains.

possession

Andree Bernhardin owned the dominions Khlan ( Klana / today Croatia) and Pröstraniek ( Prestranek / today Slovenia). He acquired Pröstraniek in 1669. His wife sold the estate in 1675 to Johann Peter von Marastoni († 1679). So Andree Bernhardin was probably already dead at this point. Marastoni's widow Kornelia married Andree Bernhardin's son Wolf Wilhelm († approx. 1687).
