Ilirska Bistrica (German Illyrisch Feistritz , Italian Villa del Nevoso ) is a city and a municipality in southwest Slovenia ; The city itself has a population of 4,869 (2002). The total community has 13,846 inhabitants (2012).

Name and coat of arms

The name Ilirska Bistrica means 'The Illyrian Bistrica' and does not go back directly to the ancient Illyrians , but to the Kingdom of Illyria , an administrative unit of the Austrian Empire between 1814 and 1849, the adjective being added to the old name Bistrica (German: Feistritz ) to distinguish the city from other cities of the same name.

The coat of arms of the city of Ilirska Bistrica refers to the history of the region, which belonged to the sphere of influence of the ancient Illyrians.

history

The region was liberated by the 4th Yugoslav Army in World War II. 284 partisans died. In 1965, a memorial was inaugurated by Janez Lenassi and Živa Baraga .
