Petar distinguished himself together with his brother Nikolaus Zrinski in the Turkish war of 1663/1664 . Both the Hungarian troops and the Imperial Army were able to win victories over the Ottomans, but they were not used.
In addition, Zrinski accompanied the Saxon Elector Johann Georg II together with Frankopan to the Reichstag in Regensburg in 1664 . Both were sitting with the elector in his six-horse carriage when the latter, escorted by his personal company, entered Croats on horseback .
The peace of Eisenburg / Vasvár, concluded by Emperor Leopold I in 1664 , in which the Ottomans were given back occupied territories in Hungary, caused great discontent among the Hungarian and Croatian nobility, the deeper cause of which, however, lay in the absolutist policy of the emperor who protected the rights of Wanted to circumcise the nobility of St. Stephen's Crown.

This formed the breeding ground for the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy against the emperor, in which Petar Zrinski also participated. The goal was the independence of Croatia from the Habsburgs. Zrinski sought support from foreign monarchs for his project, in particular from France, as the main opponent of Habsburgs, he hoped for support.
The conspiracy was exposed and Zrinski was lured to Vienna on a pretext , where he was arrested and sentenced to death. He was beheaded on April 30, 1671 together with the co-conspirator Fran Krsto Frankopan in Wiener Neustadt , Franz III. Nádasdy was executed in Vienna on the same day.
Marriage and offspring
Zrinski married the sixteen year old Ana Katarina Frankopan on October 27, 1641 at the age of 20 ; they lived mainly in Ozalj Castle (northwestern Croatia ). The marriage resulted in the son Ivan Antun and the three daughters Jelena , Judita Petronila and Aurora Veronika.
