Zrin Castle

The castle Zrin [ Serin ] ( Croatian Stari grad Zrin or Utvrda Zrin ) is a medieval castle above the village of the same name south of the town of Sisak in the Sisak-Moslavina County , central Croatia . Formerly the ancestral seat of the aristocratic family Zrinski , it was conquered by the Ottomans during the Croatian - Turkish wars in the second half of the 16th century and has remained a ruin to this day .

location

Surrounded by dense forests , the castle is located on a natural hill in the middle of a hilly landscape of the 615 meter high Zrinska gora mountain. The plateau on the top of the hill on which the castle is built is approximately 145 × 40 meters in diameter. The walls of the castle follow the morphology of the terrain.

The castle is located about 15 kilometers from the village of Dvor , the seat of the municipality , and about 25 km from the nearby town of Hrvatska Kostajnica .

history

The first mention of the castle was made in the 13th century, as a fortification of the noble family Babonić , back in Slavonia . Between 1328 and 1347 it was owned by the ancestors of the Iločki family , and then the headquarters of a branch of the noble family Šubić , later known as Zrinski . There were, among others, Nikola III. Zrinski , as well as his famous son Nikola Šubić Zrinski .

Not far away, there are also other castles and fortresses of the Zrinskis, such as B. Gvozdansko , Pedalj and Kostajnica .

In the second half of the 16th century, the Ottomans conquered the whole area. Zrin Castle fell into Ottoman hands on October 20, 1577 and was only liberated by the Habsburg army in 1718 . At the beginning of the 19th century it was hit by the great fire and then completely abandoned. In the last few years, conservation and restoration work has been carried out at times .
