Juraj Zrinski

Georg V. Šubić von Zrin , Georg V. Zrinski for short ( Croatian Juraj V. Zrinski , Hungarian Zrínyi V. György ; born January 31, 1599 in Čakovec ; †  December 28, 1626 in Pressburg ) was a count from the noble family Zrinski and Ban of Croatia .

Life

Georg (V.) Zrinski (the fifth with the same name in the family) was the son of Georg (IV.) Zrinski and his wife Sofia nee. Stubenberg. His grandfather was Nikola Šubić Zrinski , the hero of Szigetvár .

As a youth he was a Lutheran but later returned to Catholicism . He lived mostly at Ozalj Castle near Karlovac , but in 1625 he moved to Čakovec .

On November 15, 1622, Zrinski was appointed Ban of Croatia . He became known as a general who fought against the Turks in many battles.

He was married to Countess Magdalena Széchy and had two sons, Nikola and Petar , who later also became Bane of Croatia .

Zrinski took part in the Thirty Years War with his Croatian riders and died in the military camp near Pressburg in 1626 . Some historical sources indicate that he was poisoned because of a disagreement with Albrecht von Wallenstein .

Zrinski was buried in the family grave of the house in the Paulan monastery of Sveta Jelena , two kilometers from Čakovec .
