Life

Georg IV. Count Zrinski (the fourth with the same name in the family) was the son of Nikola Šubić Zrinski , the hero of Szigetvár , and his first wife Countess Katarina Zrinski nee. Frankopan .

He was the royal tavernicus (treasurer) of the Croatian-Hungarian kingdom and clan of the historical Zala county . Mostly he lived in his castle Čakovec in northern Croatia . On May 29, 1579 he granted the privileges to the residents of the surrounding settlement and since then Čakovec has been recognized as a free market. Today the city of Čakovec celebrates May 29th as “the city's birthday”.

Zrinski was very fond of Protestantism since his youth and invited Lutheran priests to occupy the Catholic parishes in Croatia. With that he created many opponents among the Catholics.

He was married to Countess Anna D'Arco , who died in 1570. With her Zrinski had a son, Nikolaus VI. (Croatian: Nikola). He married again, Countess Sofia Stubenberg , who bore him four children, among them the son Georg V , the future Ban of Croatia .

At the beginning of the 1570s, Juraj IV. Zrinski founded the printing house in Nedelišće near Čakovec , one of the first printing works in what was then Croatia. He invited the book printer Rudolf Hoffhalter from Vienna and had many books printed there. In 1574 the famous legal book Decretum tripartitum by the editor Ivanuš Pergošić was printed in Nedelišće .

Like his predecessors and successors, Juraj Zrinski also fought against the Turks in many battles, mostly with success.
