Franz Christoph Frankopan ( Croatian Fran Krsto Frankopan , Hungarian Frangepán Ferenc Kristóf ; born March 4, 1643 in Bosiljevo ; †  April 30,  1671 in Wiener Neustadt ) was a politician , writer and poet from the Croatian noble family Frankopan . Frankopan was Margrave of Istria and Count of Tätze (Terszacz) , a castle in the thenCroatia in the state union with Hungary (today to Cazin , Bosnia and Herzegovina ). He was executed by beheading for his involvement in the magnate conspiracy (in Croatia: Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy) .

Frankopan, along with Petar Zrinski , is a national hero in Croatia , but also for some Hungarians , because they fought against the Ottomans on the one hand and against the rule of the Habsburg monarchy on the other .

Frankopan stood with the palatine Franz Graf Wesselényi , Ferenc Graf Nádasdy and his brother-in-law Petar Zrinski at the head of the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy against Emperor Leopold I in Croatia and Hungary . In 1671 he was sentenced to death for high treason and beheaded together with Zrinski in Wiener Neustadt. His estates were confiscated and his family stripped of the nobility. The main seat of the noble dynasty was the Ozalj Castle near the town of the same name.
