Archaeological excavations date the first settlement to the 4th century BC. The name was first mentioned in 1196, when it was still called Kožetin . In 1882 the residents asked King Milan I to change their name to Aleksandrovac.

Aleksandrovac is famous across the country mainly for its long tradition in viticulture and fruit growing . Since 1963, the Zupska Berba festival, dedicated to viticulture, has been held every year at the end of September . One of the first Serbian secondary schools specializing in viticulture and fruit growing was founded in Aleksandrovac in 1927 and even then had high standards of education and innovation. On March 31, 2000 the museum for wine production and viticulture was built, which is located in the wine cellar of the former agricultural school.

The city's industry is also characterized by viticulture and fruit growing. So Vino Zupa now one of the largest and most successful Serbian companies in the field of production of various wines and fruit juices.

The Serbian tennis player Ilija Bozoljac was born in Aleksandrovac.
