The Grigorovich I-2 ( Russian Григорович И-2 ) was a Soviet single-engine biplane - fighter and who built in series and in the stock of this property, the first developed in their own country type Soviet air forces was taken.
history
Dimitri Grigorowitsch developed based on an alert of the Soviet Defense in 1921 as a Grigorowitsch I-1 (not to be confused with the I-1 of Polikarpow ) designated biplane with an American Liberty-L-12 -Motor. During the flight tests in 1924 there were problems with the engine cooling, and the climb performance and flight stability left a lot to be desired.
Grigorowitsch then stopped work on this type, but used it as a template for the improved I-2 (for Istrebitel (Истребитель), fighter aircraft), which received a modified structure and an engine cowling designed for better cooling. Test pilot A. I. Zhukov began flight tests in September 1924 and the first series machines were delivered a year later.
The model had a few weak points, on the one hand it was difficult to get out of the tailspin and on the other hand the pilots complained about the tight space in the cabin and the poor visibility. The then revised machine was given the designation I-2bis and was tested from July 27 to August 10 and from December 14 to 18 by W. L. Alexandrow and W. W. Kalinin . Production started in 1926. To 1929 211 pieces were built of the type 164 in the factory GAS Nos. 1 and 47 in the gas plant no. 3 Krasni Lotschik ( "Red flyer").
In the summer of 1928 attempts were made to increase the speed by installing a more powerful engine, but these efforts were soon abandoned.
