Grigorowitsch IZ ( Russian Григорович И – Ц ) is the name of a Soviet single-engine fighter aircraft that was used in the mid- 1930s . It was with him that the experiments with the single-shot, recoilless cannon by Leonid Wassiljewitsch Kurtschewski , which had started with the Tupolew I-4 .
development
Dmitri Grigorowitsch based the design on the I-5 , which he had developed together with Nikolai Polikarpow . From her he took over the front part of the fuselage and the drive. The cannons were fastened under the wings, a light machine gun PW-1 in the fuselage served as a targeting weapon for them .
Two prototypes designated as ZKB-7 (ЦКБ-7) were built. The first completed the maiden flight in the summer of 1931 with pilot B. L. Bucholz, the second in the following year with J. Piontkowski. They were still equipped with Jupiter VI from Gnôme-Rhône , the series machines got Soviet M-22 license builds.
From 1933 to 1936 71 IZs were produced, 21 were built in the Moscow aircraft plant and 50 in the Kharkov aircraft plant. They were mostly used for test purposes because the DRP cannon did not prove itself and the flight characteristics left a lot to be desired. Some examples were used in the Sweno project .
construction
The IZ was constructed in a low- wing configuration, the fuselage in all-metal half-shell construction. The wing consisted of a metal frame covered with fabric and, like the horizontal stabilizer, was braced. The struts ran to the rigid main landing gear, which had a continuous axle. There was a tail spur at the stern.
