The Grigorowitsch I-1 ( Russian Григорович И-1 ) was a Soviet fighter aircraft . It was developed by Dmitri Pawlowitsch Grigorowitsch from 1921 , at the same time as the Polikarpow I-1 . Both machines were based on the same tender.

It is a single-seater double - decker in wood construction with canvas covering. Only the engine fairing was made of aluminum and the front fuselage was given plywood planking. An American Liberty L-12 engine manufactured under license was used as the drive , the radiator of which was placed between the main landing gear struts. In autumn 1923 the machine was finally built, which took off for the first time in spring 1924 .

The machine met expectations in terms of top speed and maneuverability. However, the stability and climbing performance proved to be deficiencies. The engine also kept overheating. So there was no series production and the findings were incorporated into the revised version Grigorowitsch I-2 .
