Grigorowitsch TB-5 ( Russian Григорович ТБ-5 ) is the name of a Soviet four-engine bomber aircraft from 1931. In favor of the much more modern TB-3 , it was not put into series production. There was only a prototype . The abbreviation "TB" stands for Tjaschyoly Bombardirowschtschik (Тяжёлый бомбардировщик), heavy bomber.
development
The design work began in 1930 in the Central Design Office (ZKB) under the direction of Dmitri Grigorowitsch . The project name was ZKB-8 (ЦКБ-8).
The aircraft was designed as a shoulder- wing wing; the fuselage, wings and tail unit consisted of a tubular metal frame covered with fabric. The bow and stern were made of welded steel, the central hull, in which the bomb bay was located, of dural. The four engines were located in two tandem pods to the right and left of the fuselage and were connected to both the wings and the rigid main landing gear, including the wing struts. The drives, which are currently under development, were the FED motors with 24 cylinders in an X-arrangement by A. A. Besonow. However, it turned out quite quickly that this would not be ready in time and so were British Jupiter VI - radial engines used. The rudder unit was designed twice and connected to one another with an additional stabilization surface ("Stabiliron"). Modern aspects of the design were the closed cockpit (the TB-3 only had open pilot's cabins) and the rotating bow defense post equipped with two PW-1 machine guns.
The first flight with the test pilot of the ZKB, B. L. Bucholz, took place on May 1, 1931. The test showed poor flight performance and characteristics. A top speed of only 180 km / h was achieved. The first prototype of the TB-3 tested around the same time, however, achieved 226 km / h. During a test flight in the spring of 1932, the suspension of the rear left engine broke, wedged in the struts and caught fire. The pilot Mikhail Gromov managed to prevent the disaster and land the plane. After this incident, work on the TB-5 was stopped, especially since the series production of the TB-3 was already in preparation.
