Appelscha

history

In documents of the Hochstift Utrecht (Dutch: Sticht Utrecht , also: Aartsbisdom Utrecht ) the village "Appels" was first mentioned in 1247. It consisted of a small number of farms and the hamlets "Aekinga", "Terwisseha" and "De Bult". Around 1450, dikes were created to protect the fields in order to keep the water out of the bog soils.

The present village was built around 1827 with the influx of thousands of workers who were urgently needed for peatland colonization (Dutch: Turfwinning or Vervening ). The poor working and living conditions of the workers led to a major strike in 1888, which was followed by others. They were a high point of the anarchist movement in the Netherlands . Appelscha has since been considered a stronghold of radical socialism and anarchism .

The Pinksterland Days have been held since 1933 near Appelscha, on what is now the “Ter Vrijheidsbezinning” campsite .

Entrance sign

Appelscha is located on the border of a large forest area ( Bos area ) of around 4000 hectares with small lakes and heather . The Drents-Friese Wold was created around 1900 with pastureland, forest and arable land. Today the village is mainly known as a tourist destination with the national park where children's activities, readings, book markets, open-air theater, workshops, hikes, video and music performances take place. There are also golf and tennis facilities as well as street markets.
