Reeds in the Delver Koog

The Delver Koog is a grassland , about 1200 hectare Koog , which is located in one of the large loops of the oath . It is one of ten nature reserves in the Eider-Treene-Niederung region in western Schleswig-Holstein . The Koog is part of the municipality of Delve in the district of Dithmarschen . The Nature Conservation Union of Germany , Schleswig-Holstein State Association, looks after the nature reserve.

The nature reserve is characterized by fen areas with reed beds, Großseggenriedern and Kleinseggenwiesen. The many small open water areas with an extensive irrigation ditch system represent an important habitat, especially for birds.

Originally the area was exposed to the tidal influence of the Eider and was mainly used for reed extraction. At that time the slogan was "If you wullt warrn in't bed natt, because kumm nan'n Delv un koop Di Dack!" Even today, areas of the Koog are used for thatch extraction .

When the groundwater level in the area was lowered in 1936, a rampart was built here and the area was irrigated so as not to endanger thatch cultivation - as a result, it developed into a retreat for animals and plants that live in damp fen areas. It has extensive reed areas and is home to rare plants such as cotton grass and various species of small sedge.

The Delver Koog is one of the most important resting areas for hen harriers , and other wading and meadow birds rest here on their migrations. Continue to live in Delver Koog reed bunting , warbler , different warbler species , the bittern and marsh harrier .
