The nature reserve Dellstedter Birkwildmoor is located in Schleswig-Holstein in the district of Dithmarschen .

description

The area is located in the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape , covers an area of around 620 hectares and has been part of the FFH area 1622-391 "Moore of the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowland" and thus as Natura 2000 since January 2010 -Area designated. In April 2016, a management plan for the conservation and development of the habitat types there was drawn up by the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation on behalf of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas (MELUR) for the sub-area “Dellstedter Birkwildmoor”. It consists of the two separate raised bog remains , the Nordermoor and the Ostermoor , and the surrounding wet meadows . The peat is up to six meters thick in some places. The moor takes its name from the black grouse , which used to be represented here in very strong populations , but has disappeared from the moor as a breeding bird since the early 1980s. Large parts of the area are now owned by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association and the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation .

history

The peat removal of the Schleswig-Holstein moors began about 250 years ago, on the one hand to extract fuel and on the other hand to dry out the land so that it could later be used for agriculture. In earlier years the Ostermoor formed a barrier to the fertile meadows on the Eider for the Dellstedt farmers , as it was neither navigable nor navigable. In 1814 two dams were built through the moor to use the meadows there. The merchant Marcus Hartwig Holler from Büdelsdorf bought around 150 hectares of moorland in 1843, because he wanted to mine peat and iron for his ironworks , the Carlshütte .

With the construction of the Norderdithmarschen circular route to Dellstedt, a peat factory was built there to use the peat of the Ostermoors economically. Due to its coarse, loose structure ( white peat ), the peat was not suitable for burning, so it was used to make peat litter, which was mainly used in gardening centers and horse stables. In 1916 the peat factory was closed again for economic reasons.

Large parts of the Ostermoor were cultivated in the 1920s. In the Rethbucht, a district of Dellstedt, a pumping station was built to pump the water out of the moor. Large quantities of fertilizer and lime were then transported into the moor by rail to make the soil fertile.

Parts of the north moor were acquired by an entrepreneur in 1941 and 41 hectares of the moor were cultivated in a short time.

The renaturation measures in the Dellstedt black wild bog began around 1970, including closing the ditches to keep the water in the area. In order to push back the pipe grass , the moor is deliberately grazed by a herd of moor snakes. As a result, the typical raised bog vegetation is spreading again.

In 1957, the moor was designated as a landscape protection area, but drainage continued. It was not until 1989 that the Dellstedt black grouse moor was declared a nature reserve.

Flora and fauna

The moor is home to many animal and plant species that are rare in Germany, such as sundew , cotton grass , bog lily , bluethroat and northern moss damsel. The moor offers habitats for snipes and bluethroats.

Others

The Dellstedter Birkwildmoor was named Nature Reserve of the Year 2009 in Schleswig-Holstein. Numerous paths lead into the moor, in the Nordermoor there is a lookout tower and numerous information boards from the State Office for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas .

Other important protected moors in the Eider-Treene-Sorge-Niederung are the Wilde Moor near Schwabstedt and the Tetenhusener Moor .
