Kudensee and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Averlak and Kuden in the Dithmarschen district .

description

The approximately 246  hectare nature reserve is entered under number 20 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitization . It was designated at the end of 1992 (date of regulation: November 25, 1992) and replaced the nature reserve of the same name designated in 1988. The Kudensee had already been placed under protection in 1938 as an approximately 83 hectare nature reserve "Vogelfreistätte Kudensee". The nature reserve is almost congruent with the 249 hectare EU bird sanctuary "NSG Kudensee". The 104 hectare FFH area "Kudensee" is part of the nature reserve. The area has been looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association since 2012.

The nature reserve is located in the Elbmarsch between Brunsbüttel and Burg (Dithmarschen) . It places the Kudensee as the remainder of a beach lake with its surroundings as well as adjacent areas of the marsh under protection. The lake is of Verlandungs zones with extensive reed beds and small swamp forests and individual alder thickets surrounded. The woods west of the Kudensee are designated as natural forest and are left to their natural development. To the south and west, former rinsing fields and wet grassland areas connect, in which shallow waters are embedded in places.

The Kudensee is traversed by the Büttel Canal (also: Burger Au), which drains the area into the Kiel Canal via a pumping station . The Friedrichshofer Au flows through the protected area and flows south of the Kudensee into the Büttel Canal. The commission ditch limits the nature reserve to the southwest, the Büttel Canal to the east. Canals and ditches are also often surrounded by reed beds.

In 1980, extensive renaturation measures were carried out in the Kudensee area in order to limit the silting up of the lake. At the end of the 1980s, parts of the nature reserve were surrounded by flat walls. In this area, the water level can be regulated by monks with the aim of maintaining and developing the areas as a living space and feeding habitat for meadow and resting birds.
