description

The nature reserve is located in the southwest of the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowland north of Heide and southeast of Tönning . It places a lowland area with the Krempeler Moor in the north, the Mötjen polder adjoining it to the south with the Mötjensee lake in it and the former Steller lake in the south as well as the areas in between and surrounding areas under protection. The two lakes are former, now silted up or silted up beach lakes, which had formed between a former spit in the west and the Geestrücke in the east. In 1999, the diversion of a main receiving river and the damming of drainage ditches increased the water level by 30 to 50 cm on an area of around 320 hectares in the Mötjensee area. As a result, the other areas in the lowland were also rewetted . The open water area of the Mötjensee, which is surrounded by reed beds , increased. The former Steller See no longer has any open water surface. It is completely consumed by reed. In addition to the reeds in the lakes, the nature reserve is changeable, humid grasslands , and some were dug and dehydrated high and low moors embossed with large sedge stocks. In places, swamp forests of gray willow and eared willow as well as gagel bushes grow . As a result of the rewetting of the area, still preserved bog complexes regenerate. Peat moss and characteristic plant species settle here , including endangered species such as swamp violets , yellow rue and crab claws . Spawnweed and frog-bite communities settle in the still waters.
