Mudflats in the nature reserve

The Dithmarscher Eiderwatt , officially Dithmarscher Eidervorland with Watt , is a nature reserve in the district of Dithmarschen and in the district of North Friesland , Schleswig-Holstein .

The nature reserve is largely on the Dithmarscher side of the Eider foreland from the Eider Barrage to the Eider Bridge on Bundesstraße 5 near Tönning . It lies within the boundaries of the municipalities of Wesselburenerkoog and Karolinenkoog in the district of Dithmarschen and - in the Eider area - partly in the area of Tönning in the district of North Friesland. On the North Frisian side of the river is the nature reserve " Green Island with Eiderwatt " ( Katinger Watt ).

It developed from the much smaller (19.4 hectare) nature reserve "Vogelfreistätte Schülper Neuensiel". This existed from 1930 to 1989. The NSG was expanded in order to compensate for the effects of the Eider Barrage on nature, the construction of which had destroyed large areas of mudflats and salt marshes in the Purrenstrom of the Eider, which led to a considerable decrease in the number of resting birds .

In § 3 of the Nature Conservation Ordinance it says: "The nature reserve serves to maintain a wetland in the tidal salt and brackish water area of the Eiderestuars with tidal flats and foreland areas and the characteristic and species-rich flora and fauna associated with this habitat, in particular the resting and breeding wad - and water birds as well as the invertebrate species occurring here. "

According to NABU's 2006 breeding bird census, a total of 35 bird species with 2165 pairs of territories were breeding in the area. If you count the human-shaped areas around the Eider Barrage, the Schülperneuensiel harbor and the Eider Bridge, 43 species are found. Dominant species with at least 5% of the population were black-headed gull (22.2%), avocets (13.9%), lapwing (10.3%), oystercatchers (9.6%), redshank (9.1%), and meadow pipit (6.5%) and mallard (5.7%). Skylark (4.6%), reed bunting (4.2%) and arctic tern (2.4%) were subdominant, while gadgets (1.9%), shelducks (1.2%) and wagtail (1.3 %) were influential %).
