The Hörnum-Odde (also Hörnum Odde , Söl'ring Hörnem-Or , Danish : Hørnum Odde ) is a dune and heathland on the southern tip of the North Frisian island of Sylt in the municipality of Hörnum . To the east is the priel Hörnumtief , southwest the prielsenke Hörnumloch and the sand Theeknobs . The approximately two kilometer long Odde has been under nature protection since 1972 and is particularly threatened by tidal currents and storm surges due to its exposed location . The Hörnum-Odde is of great tourist importance.

The nature reserve is looked after by the nature conservation company Schutzstation Wattenmeer.

Coastal defense

The western edge of the dunes of Sylt is characterized by its formation of breaks and drifts to the tips of the island. On the Hörnum-Odde, tetrapods were laid in 1968 to protect the new buildings at the time in the southwest of Hörnum . Typical features of leeward erosion can be observed at the end of the transverse works. In 2012 the tetrapods were relocated.

Attempts are made to counteract the ongoing loss of land with sand flushing. The lower light on the Odde, which was erected in 1979 and operated until 1997, was dismantled and removed on November 7, 2013, as its demise was expected. It was stored in the building yard and re-erected in January 2018 as a memorial for coastal protection in Hörnum.

As a result of Hurricane Xaver in December 2013, the foundation of the former beacon was cleared and the adjacent viewing platform was destroyed. Over a length of 200 meters, this storm alone resulted in land losses of around 20 meters. After lengthening the longitudinal work , about 60 meters were lost within a year.

The storm surge in mid-November 2015 had devastating consequences for Hörnum-Odde. Severe demolitions occurred over a total of 850 meters, resulting in a loss of land of up to 60 meters. The town of Hörnum was spared by the tetrapods installed in 2014. The storm surge separated the southern part of the Hörnum-Odde almost completely from the rest of the island. In the first few weeks of 2016, further large land losses were recorded on the Hörnum-Odde.

Experts fear that the battle for Hörnum-Odde will soon be lost.
