The Hörnum lighthouse is a lighthouse on a 16 meter high dune near Hörnum in the south of the island of Sylt . The red tower has a white ribbon and two galleries.

Technical specifications

The 34 m high tower has a fire height of 48 m above sea level and a maximum range of the fire of 19 nm. It is operated electrically and has a rotating mirror optics that emit two flashes (<2 seconds) within 9 seconds (so-called return, see "Identification") ( Blz. (2) 9s ). It serves as a sea and orientation light .

history

The foundation stone of the lighthouse was laid in January 1907. On August 8, 1907, it was put into operation. The tower has been remote-controlled since the end of 1977.

Under fire

About 800 meters south of the lighthouse, there has been an additional lower light since the lighthouse was commissioned to show ships the way through the shallow Hörnumtief at the southern tip of the island of Sylt. The lower fire has been rebuilt several times. After the lower fire building fell onto the beach after a storm surge in 1979, a new building was erected. The latter consisted of a red round tower with a white band made of steel, rose 20 meters above the surface of the water and had a range of 14 nautical miles . The underfire showed a red light. After it was decommissioned in 1995, it housed a radar station. In November 2013 the lower fire was dismantled after another storm surge. Financed by donations, it has been in a small park on Rantumer Straße in the center of Hörnum since January 2018.

particularities

  • The Hörnum lighthouse, with the almost identical lighthouses Westerheversand and Pellworm, is part of a series production of the former Isselburger Hütte in Isselburg in western Münsterland. The towers were built from screwed cast iron plates, so-called tubbings .
  • From 1914 to 1933, Germany's smallest school with two to five students was housed in a room in the lighthouse about at the level of the white ring.
  • The lighthouse can be visited and there is an opportunity to tie the knot there.
  • In 2007, a special postage stamp appeared in the series "Lighthouses" in Germany , on which the Hörnum lighthouse is shown.
