Pellworm lighthouse
The Pellworm lighthouse is the tallest structure on the German North Sea island of Pellworm in the North Frisian Wadden Sea .
General information about the building
The tower is located in the south of the Pellworm marshland near the sea dike on the edge of the Nordheverstrom . The lighthouse represents both a widely visible navigation mark for shipping for orientation and navigation in the Heverstrom to the islands as well as, next to the tower of the old church , a landmark . Until August 2002 it had the function of a leading light . The lighthouse served as an overhead light and a cross- brand light . The Pellworm sub-fire belonging to this , which is now without function, is located about a good kilometer away in the Wadden Sea . This 17 meter high tower, which consists of a metal frame and carries the lantern, was "extinguished" during the conversion in 2002. Today the Pellworm lighthouse has the function of a beacon .
The tower was built in 1906/07. The masonry, polygonal ground floor was built on oak piles up to 14 meters deep in the marshland. Above this rises the tower made of prefabricated, cast-iron elements, which in its design is very similar to the lighthouses of Hörnum on the southern tip of Sylt and Westerheversand on the Eiderstedt peninsula , which were built almost simultaneously . The ground floor is painted white; next to the lighthouse is the former tower keeper's house, which was built at the same time. The tower itself is painted red, white and red and has numerous porthole-shaped and horizontally oriented window openings. The lantern is surrounded by two circulations secured by grids on different levels. The roof of the lighthouse is formed by a hood clad with sheet copper. The tower went into operation in 1907 and has been remote-controlled from the control center of the waterways and shipping office in Tönning since 1977 . It has a height of 41.5 meters. The height of the fire is 38 meters above the mean tide high water (MThw). The nominal range of the beacon is 22.3 nautical miles .
The Pellworm lighthouse can be climbed at certain times and offers the viewer a wide view over the island of Pellworm and the Wadden Sea to the neighboring island of Nordstrand , the mainland coast and the Halligen (for example Süderoog , Südfall and Nordstrandischmoor ).
Civil weddings have also been held at the lighthouse since 1998.
Philatelic appreciation
In a philatelic appraisal of the building, Deutsche Post AG issued a postage stamp worth 60 euro cents in the lighthouses stamp series on July 3, 2014 . The design comes from the graphic artist Professor Johannes Graf .
