The islands and halligen in the North Frisian Wadden Sea |
Süderoog ( Danish Sønderog , North Frisian Saruug , Saaruuch ) is a hallig in the North Frisian Wadden Sea , off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein . It belongs administratively to the municipality Pellworm and is a bird sanctuary .
geography
Today the Hallig is around one kilometer long and 800 meters wide. The closest islands are Pellworm in the northeast and Norderoog in the north. To the west-southwest is the Süderoogsand . There is a terp on Süderoog with a house on it. The Hallig is part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park .
history
Before the Burchardi flood in 1634 there were three apartments on the Hallig, one of which was occupied by the beach bailiff . He was also the overseer of a beacon , which was destroyed during the storm surge in 1634. In this storm surge, two houses were destroyed and ten people drowned. The last remaining house was destroyed in the February flood of 1825 . However, it was rebuilt and then served again as the beach bailiff's apartment.
The most famous resident was Hermann Neuton Paulsen , who ran an international youth meeting place there from 1927 until his death in 1951, the "Island of the Young". It was continued after his death by his wife Gunvor and in 1960 it was converted into a foundation that pursued the purpose “on the basis of the work of Hermann Neuton Paulsen in the interest of international understanding, to give young people from different countries the opportunity to assume responsibility The freedom to meet, get to know and live together on the Hallig Süderoog in a friendly manner, which should be adapted to the development of psychology and pedagogy at any time ”(§2 of the foundation charter, Stockholm, February 22, 1960).
Difficult sanitary conditions, which could only be insufficiently improved, as well as damage from the storm surge in 1962 caused the decline of the Süderooger Ferienwerk. Hallig, which had been privately owned by the Paulsen family for centuries, was finally sold to the State of Schleswig-Holstein in 1971. In 1974 the foundation was dissolved.
Management
Süderoog was looked after and managed by a couple from 1990 to August 2013 in the interests of coastal, nature and species protection. In September 2013, it was replaced by another couple. One of the residents' tasks is to manage the island organically and to look after the sheep and cows that graze on the salt marshes . These must be brought to the terp, for example, if there is a threat of “land under”. The primary task of the operator, however, is to maintain the bank reinforcement measures on the Hallig. Furthermore, the operators perform the tasks of a national park warden. This includes counting breeding and migratory birds on the Hallig. The visitors who come from Pellworm on guided tours or trips to Süderoog are also catered for. 500 trees were planted on the terp, from apple to oak, in five rows to provide shelter from the wind. In 2013, the trees reached a height of six to eight meters.
Non-residents only have access to Hallig Süderoog as part of a guided mudflat hike or excursions from Pellworm.
