Uthörn ( Danish : Udhjørne Holm , North Frisian : Uthörn ) is a small side island of the North Frisian North Sea island of Sylt and is after this the second northernmost island in Germany . Uthörn belongs to the Sylt municipality List .
geography
The island is located in the Königshafen , a bay on the eastern side of Sylt facing the mudflats . It is located north of List and a good kilometer south of the Ellenbogen peninsula , Germany's northernmost point.
Uthörn is 780 meters long, up to 240 meters wide and covers an area of over 13 hectares . The island is relatively young and developed from a sandbar . Due to sand washes from the Sylt coastal dunes , Uthörn has now grown to a height of a good 4.10 meters above sea level and is no longer flooded during high water. It is believed that the island will continue to grow in the future. So far, Uthörn has only been covered with pioneer plants typical of the North Sea coast, such as common beach grass.
natural reserve
The island is only a few meters away from the mudflats on the island of Sylt. It can be reached on foot across the shallow Wadden Sea . However, since it is a breeding and resting area of rare and protected sea birds , it is designated as a " Uthörn bird sanctuary " and may only be entered with express permission. It is also located in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park .
