Norderoogsand ( North Frisian Noorderuug Söön ) is the middle and second largest of the North Frisian outer sands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park . It is located west of Norderoog and Pellworm and southwest of Hooge and is separated from the Süderoogsand in the south by the Rummelloch . The sand is about 7.5 kilometers long (north-south direction) and about two kilometers wide, with the Norderoogsand also showing the typical hike in an easterly direction for the North Frisian outer sands.

Since the late 1990s, increased dune formation was observed in the north of the sand , which gave rise to a new island. In 2012 the dunes had already reached a height of four meters and the area of the island was estimated at 14  hectares . In October 2013 the island had already grown to a size of 18 hectares. A salt marsh measuring 1 hectare has developed in the middle of the island. In 2015, the island shrank to 8 to 9 hectares after the hurricanes Christian and Xaver .

Flora and fauna

Most of the sand is bare. The dunes in the northern third are overgrown with pioneer plants such as beach grass , beach rye and beach mercury . According to the National Park Administration, the number of plant species on the dune island rose from five to 70 between 2007 and 2013.

Bird brood can now also be found in the dune area. The following breeding pair population was recorded for 2012:

German name Scientific name Breeding pairs
Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus 4th
Ringed plover Charadrius hiaticula 2
Greylag goose Anser anser 4th
Black-headed gull Larus marinus 2
Eider Somateria mollissima 2
Peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus 1
Lesser black-backed gull Larus fuscus 74
herring gull Larus argentatus 149

Beyond the breeding business, the Norderoogsand is of great importance as a resting area during bird migration , when limikoles , geese and ducks are in flocks of several thousand animals on the sand. Seals use the Norderoogsand as a resting place, especially north of the dunes.

The conservation area is looked after by the Jordsand Association through the Vogelwart on Norderoog. In 2017, the association reported a rat plague on both islands. The rats are hunted.

Norderoogsand is located in protection zone 1 of the national park and may therefore only be entered with special permission.
