Japsand is the northern and smallest of the three North Frisian outer sands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park . It is located two kilometers west of the Hallig Hooge . The highest points are about 1 m above MThw . Japsand measures three kilometers in north-south direction and two kilometers in east-west direction. Like all high sands of the German Wadden Sea, the Japsand is in a west-east movement towards the coast. As the smallest and probably youngest of the North Frisian outer sands, it is the most dynamic of the three and has significantly increased in volume and area in recent decades. Computer models assume that it will have merged with the neighboring Norderoogsand by 2050 and that Hallig Norderoog will probably also be buried under itself.

In the north, the Japsand is bounded by the southern meadow . This is followed by the narrow deep as a western boundary. To the west of it was the sea sand that set in 1903. To the northeast, Langeness is 5.6 kilometers away and to the northwest Amrum with the Kniepsand is six to seven kilometers away. In the south, the Japsand is separated from the Norderoogsand, one kilometer away, by the small tidal basin Hoogeloch .

Most of the Japsand lies in the protection zone I of the national park and can therefore only be entered with a special permit. He has been looked after from Hooge by the Wadden Sea Protection Station since the 1980s . Previously, the maintenance of the protected area was regulated by the Jordsand Association . Only the northern tip of the Japsand is accessible as part of the mudflat tours that take place regularly from Hooge. The rest of the high sand is not allowed to be entered. It is separated by a row of stakes. Since 2010, a regular ship passage has been offered from Wyk auf Föhr , during which the participants disembark at the northern tip of the Japsand using a ladder and are then led from here through the Watt to Hallig Hooge.
